Bendavid leaf What’s Included

What Mold-Related Illness Care at Bendavid Includes

Whether your exposure is documented or only suspected, care starts the same way — a full accounting of your symptoms, where you’ve lived and worked, and what else could be driving how you feel, here in Burlington, Vermont.

Bendavid leaf

Symptom Evaluation

A full review of the persistent symptoms that brought you in — respiratory and sinus complaints, headaches, fatigue, cognitive fog, and the ones that don’t fit neatly into any single specialty. Symptoms come first, before any label.

Bendavid leaf

Environmental & Exposure History

A structured history of the buildings you spend time in — past leaks and floods, visible growth, musty odor, basement and crawlspace conditions, and whether symptoms change when you’re away from home or work for a few days.

Bendavid leaf

Ruling Out Other Causes

Careful evaluation of what else could explain the same symptoms — thyroid disease, anemia, sleep apnea, allergy, infection, and nutrient deficiency among them. Ruling those in or out is part of taking the exposure seriously, not an alternative to it.

Bendavid leaf

Overlapping & Co-Occurring Conditions

Patients who suspect mold often carry other complex diagnoses at the same time — mast cell activation, tick-borne illness, or POTS and dysautonomia. One team looking at the whole picture beats several specialists each seeing a fragment of it.

Bendavid leaf

Reducing Ongoing Exposure

No treatment plan works while the exposure continues. We talk through practical next steps for the building itself, because addressing the source is part of the clinical picture rather than separate from it.

Bendavid leaf

Ongoing Care & Contributing Factors

Recovery after a significant exposure is rarely a single visit. Care continues around the contributing factors that shape how you feel week to week — sleep, nutrition, stress load, and any conditions already on your chart — with the plan revisited as your symptoms change.

Bendavid leaf Our Approach

Our Approach to Mold & Environmental Illness

Naturopathic doctor with a patient during a consultation about mold exposure symptoms at Bendavid Clinic in Burlington, Vermont

Patients who suspect their home is making them sick tend to meet one of two responses: dismissal, or a confident diagnosis sold with a protocol attached. We do neither. We take the exposure history seriously as clinical information, evaluate the symptoms in front of us, and work systematically through what else could be contributing — because “it’s the mold” and “it’s nothing” are both answers that get reached too early. This page is one part of complex and chronic illness care at Bendavid Clinic, and because we also provide primary care, the doctor tracking your symptoms can be the same one reading your bloodwork and coordinating with any specialist you already see. Visits are long enough to work through a complicated history rather than a single complaint.

Neither Dismissed Nor Oversold

Environmental exposure gets waved off as anxiety by some clinicians and turned into a one-size protocol by others. We treat your exposure history as evidence, and we keep looking until the symptoms are explained.

The Whole Picture, Not One Label

Mold rarely arrives alone. Our licensed naturopathic doctors evaluate the symptoms, the building, and the conditions already on your chart together, and coordinate with your existing providers rather than around them.

Bendavid leaf What Our Patients Say

Dr. Jackie’s greatest strengths as a primary care provider lie in her natural abilities to listen, to empathize without judgement or condescension, and to enthusiastically and collaboratively design an action plan with her patients. While none of these qualities should make Dr. Jackie so unique as a care provider, it’s the unfortunate reality that many of us, especially female-identifying folks, live in. In just two visits, she was able to diagnose and create an accessible, approachable treatment plan for a number of deficiencies that other providers failed to notice. The experience has been not only validating, but healing both literally and figuratively. Burlington is BEYOND lucky to call her one of our own.

— P.T.

At the first appointment I instantly felt the warmth her office and whole self brings, it’s the most comfortable space and she offers the most inviting presence to be able to open up to and receive the kind of advice that is not only extremely helpful, but shows that she truly cares about her patients. I am so grateful I have found Dr. Jackie. Thank you so much for your inviting presence and everything you have taught me thus far!

— G.T.

I’ve had chronic health issues for years and Dr. Jackie is everything. Never felt so heard and seen and cared for by a primary care physician as much as I do with her! Thank you for truly caring about what you do and making the world a better place.

— H.P.

What is mold-related illness?
Mold-related illness is the general term for persistent symptoms that develop in people exposed to indoor dampness, mold, or water-damaged buildings. It isn’t one single disease. The pattern varies from person to person and commonly includes respiratory and sinus symptoms, headaches, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating. At Bendavid Clinic in Burlington, Vermont, care focuses on the individual’s symptoms, environmental history, and other contributing factors rather than on a single label.
What are the symptoms of mold exposure?
The symptoms most consistently associated with indoor dampness and mold are respiratory: coughing, wheezing, nasal congestion, sinus irritation, and worsening asthma. Many people also report headaches, fatigue, skin or eye irritation, and difficulty concentrating. A pattern worth noting is symptoms that improve when you spend several days away from a particular building and return when you do — that history is clinically useful and worth bringing to a first visit.
Is mold toxicity or CIRS a recognized medical diagnosis?
Not universally. “Mold toxicity,” “toxic mold syndrome,” and CIRS (chronic inflammatory response syndrome) are terms used by some clinicians and patient communities, but they are not established diagnoses in mainstream medicine, and the tests marketed alongside them are debated. What is well documented is that living or working in a damp, mold-affected building is associated with real symptoms. Bendavid Clinic evaluates those symptoms and that exposure history regardless of which label a patient arrives with.
How is suspected mold exposure evaluated?
Evaluation starts with the two things that carry the most information: a detailed symptom history and a detailed environmental history — which buildings, what water damage, what timeline, and whether symptoms change when you’re away. From there, evaluation focuses on identifying or ruling out other conditions that produce the same symptoms, such as thyroid disease, anemia, sleep apnea, allergy, and infection.
Can mold exposure cause brain fog and fatigue?
Fatigue and difficulty concentrating are among the most frequently reported symptoms in people living or working in damp, mold-affected buildings, though the mechanism is not fully settled and other causes are common. That uncertainty is a reason to evaluate carefully, not a reason to dismiss the symptoms. A workup that takes the exposure seriously while also checking thyroid function, iron status, sleep, and other contributors is the responsible approach.
Is mold-related illness connected to MCAS, POTS, or Lyme disease?
These conditions frequently appear together in the same patients, and it is common to arrive suspecting mold while also carrying a diagnosis of mast cell activation syndrome, tick-borne illness, or dysautonomia. Whether one causes another is not settled, but evaluating them in isolation tends to miss the picture. Bendavid Clinic sees these overlapping presentations together, alongside hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos care for patients who need it.
Should I test my home for mold, and does the clinic do that?
Bendavid Clinic does not inspect or test buildings — that is the work of qualified inspection and remediation professionals, and it is a separate service from medical care. Visible growth, a musty odor, or a known history of leaks or flooding is often enough to act on without testing first. What matters clinically is that ongoing exposure is addressed, because symptom care works better once the source is dealt with.
Does insurance cover mold-related illness care, and are you accepting new patients?
We’re currently accepting new patients, and no referral is needed. Coverage varies by plan and by service: office visits are generally billed as medical visits, while specialty testing related to environmental exposure is frequently not covered and is often self-pay. Building inspection and remediation are never a medical benefit. Call our Burlington, Vermont office at 802-881-0424 and we’ll help you confirm your plan before your first visit.
